Alaina’s paper accepted at MBoC!

2018 is off to a great start: MBoC has recently accepted a manuscript by Alaina Willet, a post-doc in the Gould lab!

This paper builds on the work of former graduate student Adam Bohnert, which demonstrated phospho-regulation of the formin Cdc12, which is essential for forming the actin of the contractile ring. Adam also identified Sid2 as one of Cdc12's regulatory kinases (Bohnert, KA et al., Genes and Dev, 2013). Alaina's paper reveals that Cdc12 is also phosphorylated by cyclin dependent kinase (CDK) to ensure proper timing of Cdc12 division site localization, contributing insight into how the actin nucleation/elongation activity of formins can be fine-tuned to construct diverse actin structures to accomplish distinct cell functions and also highlighting a potential role for CDK regulation of multiple contractile ring components.
