Student Horizon Grant
Supplemental Support for International Conference Travel
The LIVE Student Horizon Grant offers up to $1,000 to support LIVE students in presenting their research at an international conference. This grant is designed to supplement gaps in grant funding and to offset travel expenses to foster academic and professional growth for student members of the LIVE community. It provides students with an opportunity to share their research and network with global scholars while contributing to LIVE’s visibility and impact in relevant academic communities.
Eligibility Criteria
- Active involvement in LIVE (e.g. participation in LIVE events and activities such as the Innovation Series, Spark! events, summer program, half-baked forum, mentoring more junior students)
- Main presenter (generally first author) on a paper accepted to international conference
- Paper topic aligned with LIVE’s focus on innovation in learning technologies
- Typical conferences include the following, though any conference relevant to innovation in learning technologies can be requested
- Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK)
- Annual Meeting of the International Society of the Learning Sciences (ISLS)
- Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd)
- Conference location must be outside the United States
- Funding may only be requested once per calendar year
Funding
Up to 6 students will be awarded the $1000 travel grant each year. Funds can be used to cover the following expenses:
- Airfare and transportation
- Conference registration fees
- Hotels
- Meals and incidental expenses (subject to per diem limits)

The application form asks you to share information about the paper, conference, and budget and an uploaded PDF for documentation that includes your CV. You will also need to provide the name of the LIVE faculty member who will provide a brief Statement of Support.
Application Deadlines
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis in two cycles every year. Cycle one is for conferences in January through June and cycle two for conferences between July and December. Applicants will be notified within 30 days of submission with a decision about their application.
Selection Process
The LIVE Student Horizon Grant Committee is made up of students and faculty from the LIVE community. Decisions for eligible proposals are based on:
- Student involvement in the LIVE community
- Alignment of paper and conference with LIVE’s focus on innovation in learning technologies
- Value of conference attendance to applicant’s academic or professional goals
- Priority will be given to
- Highly selective conferences
- Conferences with archival proceedings, if applicable to the domain
- Papers that have acknowledged the support of LIVE in their submission
- Students who have not received a LIVE Student Horizon Grant previously
Grantee Requirements
Students receiving a LIVE Student Horizon Grant are required to:
- Acknowledge the support of LIVE in the slide deck, poster, and/or associated publication (high-resolution copies of the LIVE logos are available on our website)
- Deliver a 5-10 minute presentation of the paper to the LIVE community at an end-of-year showcase session
