Betty’s Brain

Posted by on Thursday, June 20, 2024 in Uncategorized.

Betty’s Brain is a computer-based learning environment that utilizes the learning-by-teaching paradigm to engage students in learning about science topics. Students teach a computer agent named Betty by constructing a causal model of the systems or processes relevant to the topic (e.g., ecosystems, climate change, thermoregulation). This requires students to be responsible learners and teachers, using hypertext resources to model their understanding and assess Betty’s knowledge through questions and quizzes. Each topic includes an expert model that students aim to teach Betty, with Mr. Davis grading quizzes and providing feedback to guide students.

The open-ended nature of Betty’s Brain allows students to choose their learning and teaching methods, whether modeling their understanding first or reading resources entirely before teaching. Students also vary in their information-seeking approaches, either sequentially reading resources or breaking tasks into sub-goals. Success in this environment demands active regulation of learning activities, as research shows that exploring and model building can lead to deeper learning. To support students struggling with managing their learning, Betty’s Brain offers dynamic scaffolding and feedback, helping them develop skills essential for future learning endeavors.

The learning environment has now been adopted by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and is hosted on the Platform for Innovative Learning Assessments (PILA; https://pilaproject.org/) as an example of a NextGen assessment implemented on a digital platform.  OECD and Vanderbilt researchers are working with teachers world-wide to help them adopt  Betty’s Brain for their classroom instruction and assessment.
