Bavavarshini Tamilselvam

Research Assistant

Bavavarshini began her academic journey at SRM University in Chennai, India, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Biotechnology. During this time, she delved into the world of microbial enzyme synthesis and purification, laying the groundwork for her future research endeavors. Pursuing her interest in medical biotechnology, Bavavarshini moved to the US for her master’s degree, where she worked under the guidance of Dr. Xue-Jun Li, investigating the mechanisms underlying multi-organelle dysfunction and neurodegeneration in Hereditary spastic paraplegia. Her research deepened her understanding of the intricate relationships between cellular processes and neurological disorders. Currently, Bavavarshini is excited to be a part of Dr. Sezen Meydan’s lab, where she is exploring the role of ribosome collisions in neuronal disorders. Examining neurodegeneration in a translational sense has the potential to reveal new avenues for understanding and addressing neurodegenerative diseases in a new light. Outside of the lab, Bavavarshini enjoys recharging with a refreshing nap or going on new travels. She is always on the lookout for the best drinking chocolate in town – a sweet treat to fuel her scientific pursuits!
