2024 Presentations

We evaluated effects of a statewide, multi-component training model for improving FBAs and BIPs using a pre-post design. Results provided descriptive evidence of improvement post-training and informed which aspects of FBAs and BIPs (e.g., replacement behavior goals, progress monitoring) warranted further targeted supports. Oral presentation delivered at the 2024 Applied Behavior Analysis International Conference in Philadelphia.

2023 Presentations

We presented the results of a systematic literature review on behavioral interventions targeting noncompliance for preschoolers, with a focus on the social validity of intervention goals and procedures. Oral presentation at the 2023 Tennessee Association for Behavior Analysis conference.

We explored potential impacts of medication changes on reinforcer preference for 19 school-age children with disabilities who had been prescribed medication to address behavioral challenges. Children were given a choice between two concurrently available reinforcement configurations, and we collected data on the total time spent in each condition. Oral presentation delivered at the 2023 Applied Behavior Analysis International Conference.

We presented the results of a descriptive observational study designed to quantify moment-to-moment interactions between teacher practices (e.g., opportunities to respond, praise, reprimands) and student challenging and appropriate behavior. Oral presentations delivered at the 2023 Association for Positive Behavior Supports Conference & the 2022 Tennessee Association for Behavior Analysis Conference.

2022 Presentations

We embedded a concurrent chains arrangement within an alternating treatments design to compare levels of contextually appropriate and challenging behavior under unsignaled and signaled SBT conditions, and to determine which condition was preferred by the student. Oral presentation delivered at the 2022 Tennessee Association for Behavior Analysis Conference.

2021 Presentations

We interviewed school-based behavior and mental health specialists who support students with behavioral and/or social-emotional challenges to learn about their perspectives on interdisciplinary collaboration. Oral presentation delivered virtually at the 2021 Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference.

2020 Presentations

We developed a 9-module training series for school-based teams on the instruction-based concurrent operant assessment, a behavior analytic assessment that can be used in schools to develop an intervention to support student engagement and work completion. Oral presentation delivered virtually at the 2020 Tennessee Association for Behavior Analysis Conference.

We trained three classroom educators (special education teacher, paraeducator, and behavior coach) to implement skill-based treatment (Hanley et al., 2014) with fidelity via intensive, individualized coaching. Oral presentation delivered virtually at the 2020 Association for Behavior Analysis International Conference.

Educators implemented a comprehensive, function-based behavioral intervention with near-ceiling levels of fidelity following participation in an individualized coaching protocol. Poster prepared for the 2020 Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference.

2019 Presentations

We conducted generalizability and decision studies to inform the utility of progressive ratio and demand latency scores in evaluating the effects of medication for children who engage in challenging behavior. Poster presented at the 2019 Association for Behavior Analysis International Conference.

We designed a decision tool to aid school-based BCBAs in selecting a hypothesis testing strategy based on relevant student and classroom factors. Oral presentation delivered at the 2019 Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference.

2018 Presentations

As part of a broader observational study, we collected direct observation data on classroom behavior for twenty students with challenging behavior and their teachers. We used data from 30-min observations during the same instructional routine across five school days to evaluate teacher and student reactivity to the presence of observers. Poster presented at the 2018 Association for Behavior Analysis International Conference.

We surveyed school practitioners to learn about their perspectives on the acceptability, feasibility, and utility of three hypothesis testing strategies: functional analysis, antecedent analysis, and concurrent operant analysis. Oral presentation delivered at the 2018 Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference.

2017 Presentations

We conducted generalizability and decision studies to inform the sources of variance in direct classroom-based measures of student and teacher behavior. We found that the person X session interaction accounted for substantial variance across student and teacher behaviors. This suggests a need to average across many observations to obtain stable estimates of these behaviors. Poster presented at the 2017 Gatlinburg Conference.
