The Verdict: Integrating C. elegans as a Model for Valvulogenesis
As powerful of a model organism C. elegans are, there is still applicable research that can be conducted using molecular genetic approaches.
1. Reverse genetic approach: injection of double stranded RNA (dsRNA) into worms leads to specific degradation of the corresponding mRNA, a process termed RNA interference. This can be done to knock down candidate pharynx specification genes, either one at a time or in combination(s).
2. Forward genetic approach: Since C. elegans embryos are permeable to small molecules, they could be fed an array of drugs, either one at a time or in combination(s), and the researcher can observe what type of pharyngeal defect forms and then identify the gene(s) that contribute(s) to the phenotype.
