Leif Ericson

Leif Ericson is one of the first European travelers who has landed in the Americas almost 500 years before Columbus. According to the Sagas of Icelanders, Leif Ericson established a Norse settlement in New Foundland; the part that belongs to Canada today. It is believed that Ericson was born in Iceland in 970, but he died in Greenland in 1020.

Leif and his crew traveled from Greenland to Norway in 999.  The two only known strictly historical mentions of Vinland are found in the work of Adam of Bremen (1075) and in the the Book of Icelanders (1122). He was blown off course and this is how he ended up discovering Vinland.
