Doug is from Pittsburgh, PA. He obtained his B.S. in Chemistry in 2002 from Carnegie Mellon University. For his PhD, Doug worked with Michael Marletta at UC-Berkeley where his thesis centered on an oxidative post-translational modification of cysteine. In 2006, Doug began his postdoctoral study with Jack Dixon at UC-San Diego. His work focused on bioinformatic and structure-function studies of streptolysin S, a potent cytolytic toxin. Doug joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2009 with the John and Margaret Witt Professorship. In 2025, he moved to Vanderbilt University’s School of Medicine where he is currently the William Kelly Warren Sr. Chair in Biochemistry and Director of the Vanderbilt Institute for Chemical Biology. Doug is married, has two boys, and a hyperactive dog (Paco). Outside of lab, Doug enjoys running and spending time with his family.
