<\/em><\/p>\nWhat do you do for the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery at Vanderbilt University?<\/strong><\/p>\n I primarily work with other scientists and postdocs on synthesizing new compounds for projects of interest that have not yet fully gotten off the ground to establish a medicinal chemistry perspective on which to build moving forward. I also have personal projects ranging from collaboration on antibiotics with research groups at the University to chemical methodology studies for improved syntheses of known compounds.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n How long have you been working with the WCNDD?<\/strong><\/p>\n I am just beginning my 8th<\/sup> month of work as a postdoc with the WCNDD and am grateful for the opportunity and experience every day.<\/p>\n What is unique about working for WCNDD?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n I love the interplay of academia and industry that the core is centered around. The academic atmosphere allows for such an air of creativity and collaboration that you don\u2019t find in most workplaces, but I am also able to learn from people with a wide variety of backgrounds in the chemical\/biochemical world that isn\u2019t always possible in a purely research-oriented space.<\/p>\n What is your favorite memory or project you completed during your time at WCNDD so far, and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n I honestly have the fondest memories of the times the center comes together to celebrate, whether it be for progression of a successful drug candidate or just to honor someone who is moving on to new things in life. It really highlights the closeness of the community and the care everyone puts into both their professional and interpersonal relationships here.<\/p>\n What is a professional or personal achievement that you are most proud of?<\/strong><\/p>\n Winning the intramural 3-point shooting competition in undergrad. I got a cool shirt and a free year\u2019s worth of Zaxby\u2019s which was definitely of best use in college.<\/p>\n What is a fun fact about you?<\/strong><\/p>\n I am partially color blind, so PLEASE use bold colors when highlighting data or graphing curves.<\/p>\n What activities do you like to do outside of work?<\/strong><\/p>\n I\u2019m a big sports fan and originally from Knoxville, so it\u2019s hard to find a time of year where I\u2019m not (sadly most often) invested in some Tennessee-based team. Going to games or watch parties on weekends is always fun in the Spring and Fall. Other times I\u2019m more of a homebody and would usually be found playing games of any sort with my girlfriend or whoever is available.<\/p>\n What advice would you give to a student interested in pursuing a career in your field of work? <\/strong><\/p>\n Talk to everyone you can, especially in specific areas you may be interested. Connections are always important so having people know you and your body of work is the best way to get in the door. Otherwise, don\u2019t be afraid to ask questions if you\u2019re curious about something or just don\u2019t know.
