The Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery at Vanderbilt University consists of a remarkable community dedicated to advancing the translation of basic science to novel therapeutics to treat serious brain disorders. In addition to our outstanding faculty, postdocs, and trainees who are at the forefront of our cutting-edge research, a large part of our center’s success is attributed to our staff.

We sat down with Elizabeth Childress, Drug Discovery Scientist I, who told us a little about herself.

What do you do for the Warren Center for Neuroscience Drug Discovery at Vanderbilt University?

I am a drug discovery scientist, and I lead and work on several medicinal chemistry programs that focus on targeting G protein-coupled receptors and potassium ion channels.

How long have you been working with the WCNDD?

I’ve worked at the WCNDD for almost 8 years. I started out as a postdoc and then was fortunate enough to be hired as a drug discovery scientist.

What is unique about working for WCNDD?

The WCNDD is driven by team science. There isn’t a workday that goes by that you won’t see discussions going on between the different teams and disciplines at the Center. This collaborative environment has truly fostered the Center’s success.

What is your favorite memory or project you completed during your time at WCNDD so far, and why?

I’m very proud of the multiple projects I have worked on in collaboration with Ono Pharmaceuticals. I was a part of this collaboration as both a postdoc and a drug discovery scientist, and it has greatly shaped my experience as a medicinal chemist.

What is a professional or personal achievement that you are most proud of?

Obtaining my doctorate in chemistry was a proud moment for me, and I am grateful I get to use my degree to help develop potential treatments for CNS disorders here at the WCNDD.

What is a fun fact about you?

I grew up on a farm. My family raises beef cattle and grows corn and wheat.

What activities to do you like to do outside of work?

I love growing house plants, especially orchids. I also love gardening – my current home project is focused on improving the landscaping in my backyard. I also enjoy taking barre classes.

What advice would you give a student interested in pursuing a career in your field of work?

I would advise them to never stop learning. Be willing to read, ask questions, and seek guidance from those with more experience than you, especially in fields outside of your expertise.
