Samantha Oviedo

Samantha is a rising junior (class of 2023) majoring in biochemistry at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). She joined the lab as part of the Vanderbilt Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in Chemical Biology for the Summer 2021.

Samantha worked on evaluating the role of 139-loop residues in arrestin-1/rhodopsin interaction. Using 139-Loop arrestin-1 mutants on WT and enhanced background (3A), she performed direct binding assays to assess the effects of the mutations on arrestin-1 binding to rhodopsin.

At UTSA, Samantha is a student mentor for the ESTEEMED (Enhancing Science, Technology, EnginEering, Math Educational Diversity) Program as well as a member of the NIH-RISE Program.
