By employing text analytics, we explored the potential drivers of regional water quality narratives within 25 local news sources across the United States. The goal of the research was to extend our current understanding of variations in local narratives to consider nuances of water quality issues and indicate opportunities for increasing equity in environmental risk communication.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Assistants:<\/strong> <a href=\"\/dwjlab\/person\/mariah-d-caballero\/\">Mariah D. McDonald<\/a><\/p>\n <!-- rich-text -->\n        <h2><a href=\"\/dwjlab\/research\/machine-learning-approach-to-predicting-pfas-contamination-in-community-water-systems-cwss\/\">Machine Learning approach to predicting PFAS contamination in Community Water Systems (CWSs)<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Goal: <\/strong>Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances or PFAS are an emergent class of contaminant molecules harmful to human health. PFAS testing is currently conducted on a limited, statewide basis. While millions of Americans are potentially exposed to PFAS compounds through their drinking water, only 17 states have enforceable standards, guidance levels, or require notification of presence in drinking water. The project assessed if dental services in Tennessee are in the areas of greatest need. The &#8216;area of greatest need&#8217; was defined as a community served by a water system that did not meet the recommended American Dental Association (ADA) fluoridation level to prevent dental caries (i.e., cavities), 0.7 parts per million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Assistants:<\/strong> <a href=\"\/dwjlab\/person\/ashley-kim\/\">Ashley Kim<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty Advisors: <\/strong><a href=\"\/dwjlab\/person\/jack-ding\/\">Dr. Ke Jack Ding<\/a>, <a href=\"\/dwjlab\/person\/yolanda-j-mcdonald\/\">Dr. Yolanda J. Smith<\/p>\n <!-- rich-text -->\n        <h2><a href=\"\/dwjlab\/tennessee-private-wells-project\/\">Tennessee Private Wells Project<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Goal: <\/strong>The Tennessee Private Wells Project is a multi-methods pilot study conducted in rural Tennessee. The project was a collaborative effort with the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), funded by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA). The goal of this project was to develop a methodology to estimate populations reliant on private well drinking water sources and associated risk of contamination.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Assistants:<\/strong> <a href=\"\/dwjlab\/person\/mariah-d-caballero\/\">Mariah D. McDonald<\/a><\/p>\n <!-- rich-text -->\n        <h2><a href=\"\/dwjlab\/tennessee-public-water-operator-survey\/\">Tennessee Public Water Operator Survey<\/a><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Goal: <\/strong>The Tennessee Public Water Operator Survey project is a community-based participatory research project. For this project, DWJL members partnered with the Tennessee Association of Utility Districts, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, and the Tennessee Department of Health to create and implement a statewide survey that asks frontline water professionals to assess their systems&#8217; technical, managerial, and financial capacity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Assistants:<\/strong> <a href=\"\/dwjlab\/person\/kayla-m-anderson\/\">Kayla M.
